Don't get stuck in the muck!

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

I remember going clamming with my parents and grandparents one day when I was a child. We all piled into Grandpa’s car and took off for Long Island Sound. When we got there, Grandpa decided to drive right down to the water’s edge. Everybody told him he shouldn’t, but he decided he was going to do it anyway.

Well, we almost got there and then Grandpa’s car got stuck in the muck. The car couldn’t go back and it couldn’t go forward and there we were, stuck good and proper! This happened many years ago and I don’t remember how Grandpa got the car out, but I do remember it took hours.

I got to thinking about this experience just the other day and asked myself the question: “How many times do we drive right into the muck and get stuck?” How often does our thinking get stuck in the muck, just like Grandpa’s car? It’s easy to get preoccupied with an obstacle, to step on it like a gas pedal, spinning our wheels faster and faster, becoming mired in the problem until a solution seems all but impossible.
