Quick facts about the Dead Sea Scrolls

What exactly are the Dead Sea Scrolls?

In about 1947, a Bedouin shepherd or shepherds found seven scrolls in a cave near an ancient settlement named Qumran, not far from the Dead Sea. Some scholars feel these are the only scrolls that qualify to be called the Dead Sea Scrolls.

But between 1947 and 1956, about 800 more scrolls were found in the same general area. Unlike the original seven scrolls, which were in good enough condition to be readable, the subsequent finds included items in very poor shape. In fact, the collection includes about 25,000 fragments, some as small as a fingernail.
