The Mastery of Fear

The world is always tracking down some new peril and trying to cope with it. Yet the world does nothing about fear itself—the emotion within that trembles more than any earthquake, flames more than any fire, gusts more than any wind. Some moderns teach that fear is healthy because it alerts to danger. Why not wisdom instead?

Four hundred years ago a writer said, "Whenever conscience commands anything, there is only one thing to fear, and that is fear." This thought was echoed by Montaigne, Bacon, Thoreau, and Roosevelt. But if the race has known this much, why hasn't more progress been made in casting out fear? Because mankind have not learned what fear is. Until one knows the nature of the enemy, its armament and theater of operations, how can one win the battle, then the war?

But Christian Science has solved the mystery. It unmasks fear and shows exactly how to conquer it. Mrs. Eddy sums fear up in eight words: "Fear is a belief of sensation in matter."Miscellaneous Writings, p. 93; This puts it right into the crucible of religion, for what is matter but the denial of the allness of Spirit? Christ Jesus said plainly, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."John 4:24;

Mrs. Eddy has enabled everyone to do just this through her discovery of the Science of Christ. Hers is the glorious revelation of Spirit filling all space, constituting man and the universe, which leaves no room for matter. Spirit is Soul, the creator of man's faculties, or senses, which must be spiritual; therefore the only sensation must be spiritual. And Soul is Mind, which never creates beliefs but spiritual ideas only, for Mind knows.

So come the simple premises in order: All is Spirit; there is no matter. All is Soul; there is no sensation in matter. All is Mind; there is no belief in matter or in sensation in matter. Conclusion: There is no fear.

Thus Christian Science dissects fear objectively. We see what it is and what to do about it, and our newfound dominion restores our original liberty as the sons and daughters of God. And to think that this is a religious experience—part of our worship of God as All-in-all! Far from being based on a human rationale, the destruction of fear is an element of metaphysical healing in Christian Science. God glorified His holy name to Mrs. Eddy, and she knew perfect Love as God Himself—God, the absolute good, to whom evil is unknown. She read the deeper meaning of John's beautiful thought, "There is no fear in love; perfect love casteth out fear,"I John 4:18; and in that discovery the Bible verse became a new thing on earth. As there is no fear in Love, God, there is none in Love's likeness, man.

Emerson astutely asked, "If I quake, what matters it what I quake at?" Ralph Waldo Emerson, Essays, "Character"; Indeed! What we are afraid of is trivial compared to what we are afraid with. Which is—? Mortal mind. Take away the thing we have been afraid of, and we feel relieved. But have we done anything to that which is doing the fearing? If not, there will soon be a new thing to be afraid of. What to do? The same as we'd do if our car fell into the category of a "jalopy." Dispose of it.

There is only one way to be rid of mortal mind: by acknowledging God as the one and only Mind, infinite and eternal. And this truth has a corollary: that there is no reality in mortal mind, either as a worldwide devil or as a private, personal mind for each mortal. God never made such. Did it make itself? Mrs. Eddy says: "That mortal mind claims to govern every organ of the mortal body, we have overwhelming proof. But this so-called mind is a myth, and must by its own consent yield to Truth."Science and Health, pp. 151-152;

Is this possible? Yes, it is. Thousands have read Science and Health and proved that this myth-mind does surrender to the Christ Science, and "by its own consent." This comes to pass when through deep reverence for God we give Him the glory that is His as the one and only Mind. Then are heard psalms of gratitude in the temple of demonstration.

As we realize we do not have minds of our own to be afraid with, we master the things we have been afraid of. When we cast out the alleged cause of the trouble, we are rid of its effects. The only way to logically deny the personal mind supposed to reside in the cranium is by realizing that God is our Mind. This Mind is not even in its idea, much less in matter.

The allness of Mind understood casts out fear because it casts out that which fears. John said, "He that feareth is not made perfect in love."I John 4:18; But he that is made perfect in Love, fears not. And who is made perfect in Love but spiritual man, individual consciousness, the reflex image of God? This true reflection is perfect, not in the human emotion misnamed love but in God, who is the one and only Mind. And this perfection demonstrated fulfills the first commandment.

All the "other gods" have to be negated; but if by "gods" we mean minds, then what are we doing but ruling out all minds other than God? On what basis? On the basis of the truth that God is the all-creative Mind who forever governs what He creates. Thus we see how beautiful is Mrs. Eddy's insight into this law. Writing of divine substance she says, "The belief that man has any other substance, or mind, is not spiritual and breaks the First Commandment, Thou shalt have one God, Mind."Science and Health, p. 301.

How perfectly these statements balance: Thou shalt have no other minds before Me; thou shalt have one Mind. They repudiate the alleged existence of all other minds, single or collective. No mind without, of which to be afraid; no mind within, with which to be afraid. No mental organ to think of matter, and no matter for it to think of. No mind to believe in evil, and no evil for it to believe.

Christian Science dissolves the illusory troubles of mankind, casting out fear as a nonentity that has never had a moment of real existence, for divine Love forever fills all space. So the miracle of Love is revealed as the naturalness of Truth, and never again need fear be feared; for the mystery of evil fades, lost in the mastery of fear.

Disease isn't where it seems to be; it isn't what it seems to be. It isn't a material sensation or condition of the body; it's a mental suggestion of a myth-mind. Things equal to the same thing are equal to each other; so call it pain or call it fear: both are nothing but "a belief of sensation in matter." And when we rule that out with our understanding of the allness of the Mind that is our Soul and Spirit, is there anything left to quake at?

Better still, is there anything left to quake?
