Prayer for the FIFA World Cup, June 12-July 13

Live audio chat with Lyle Young, C.S.B. and Alessandra Colombini, C.S.B.

Global brotherhood and participating in events as healers are two major themes that run through this chat. In his opening comments, Lyle Young says that the World Cup gives us an opportunity to lift thought about ourselves, to pray for and value the whole world. We can participate as healers and cherish the spiritual qualities expressed by all participants—including the fans. Alessandra agrees. She notes that Christian Scientists in Brazil have been praying for over a year about the World Cup, supporting the good for all people that can come from it.

Site visitors asked questions about how to pray about sports injuries, what specific points to pray about regarding the World Cup matches and also why people should be praying. Safety for the players and also for people watching the games at sites in other countries was part of the discussion. Some people asked what Christian Science churches in Rio de Janeiro were doing in response to the matches in their area. And others wanted to know how to pray about the government's decision to spend money on the World Cup preparations rather than on social programs. A site visitor made the point that discouraging words were also written about the Olympic Games in Sochi and noted the need to be alert to discouraging reports about such events in the future.
