The Standard of Love

Let us lift up our hearts with a joy untoldFor this truth that has come to the lives of men,A standard that Love has for us unrolledAnd raised at the break of the day, again.
What makes little children quite happy and good,And banishes tempers both naughty and rude?

The Mother-Love

As to the downy nest the spent bird fliesAt sunset time; as to the waters grayMoves glad the trusting ship whose purpose diesWithout its strong upholding; as the dayGoes joyfully to night's embrace at last,And as the star, aweary far aboveWith its night-watching, hails the dawning vast—So rests, so hides the world in mother-love!

If I can Live

If I can liveTo make some pale face brighter, and to giveA second lustre to some fear-dimmed eye,Or e'en impartOne throb of comfort to an aching heart,Or cheer some wayworn soul in passing by;

Understanding

To know the whence and wherefore of the things one sees,To comprehend a reason in the hills and trees,And recognize completeness in divine decrees,Is understanding.

This Day

This day, and this only,Is ours to command.

The Rest of God

O'er the bright waves of distant GalileeSoft falls the sunset light, with tender afterglow; And o'er the sacred haunts of himWho once oft lingered there,A golden splendor softly falls; And o'er this sea of gold there comes once moreThe heavenly echo of that voice divine:"Come unto me, all ye that laborAnd are heavy laden,And I will give you rest.

Love Reigns

Love reigns! Dear friend,Be not discouraged nor repine; But lifting thought and word and deed aloft,Give thanks with grateful heart     For Love divine.

Man Victorious

Tempestuous wind was bleak and coldAs he sped with icy breath,And sought frail man to pierce and holdAgainst the gate of death—With rheum, and ache, and shivering sigh,To whelm his troubled breath.
Our Father who art in heaven, We thank Thee for Thy care, And all the blessings Thou hast given We would with others share.

A Hint

If only you'll think of it, dearie, When people are vexing and rude, And be pleasant for two, When one's scolding at you, You will conquer the contrary mood.

Light

All mundane ties bide here their hour and go,And earthly friendships find their eventide; Life's sun, to seeming, sets on all below, Yet shines again, with shadows scattered wide.
