The Menace of the Tower

In storied Venice, down whose rippling streetsThe stars go hurrying and the white moon beats,Stood the great Bell Tower, fronting seas and skies—Fronting the ages, drawing all men's eyes;Rooted like Teneriffe, aloft and proud.

"Count the sheep and Go to Sleep"

As soon as the fire burns red and low,And the house up-stairs is still, She sings me a queer little sleepy song, Of sheep that go over the hill.

Time to do well ; time to live better; Give up grudge, answer that letter; Speak that kind word to sweeten a sorrow, Do that good deed you would leave till to-morrow.

A Gleam

Far away to westward glowingJust a tiny ray,But enough to guide me safelyHome, at close of day.
My father dear works in the mines,Down in the tunnels dark.

The Song and the Deed

The Child in the Garden

When to the garden of untroubled thoughtI came of late, and saw the open door,And wished again to enter, and exploreThe sweet, wild ways with stainless bloom inwrought,And bowers of innocence with beauty fraught,It seemed some purer voice must speak beforeI dared to tread that garden loved of yore,That Eden lost unknown and found unsought.

A Vacation Song

I have shut my books and hidden my slateAnd tossed my satchel across the gate.

Faith

Just to keep your thought true, Steadfast,Just to know that God is here,Just to feel His arms about you,Just to trust, and have no fear.

Eternal Day

Eternal day! Eternal day!One prayer the multitude shall pray.
O singing birds, O singing birds, ye sing in field and skyThe simple songs of love and joy ye sang in days gone by;I hear you in the meadows now and up the mountain stream,And as I listen to your voice I dream an old-world dream.

Praise

There's a song—how well we know it!Softly sung in all our days,"God is Love—to Him all glory!"Angel thoughts and voices raise—"God is Love—to Him all glory,God is All—to Him sing praise!"
