Poems

Awake ! Arise! Leave sleep and dreams!God's children know no dreaming; There is no sin and suffering,Where Truth and Love are beaming.

"What manner of love"!

Behold what love! What wondrous love, indeed,Hath God bestowed on him whom He calls son!A Father-Mother-love that meets each need,A love that strengthens till each fight is won!

From Church

The demand for church

I like to think of each church that grows up in a community as that community's answered prayer for the presence of the saving Christ—the message of God's love for humanity.

Love's Requirement

Has thy brother aught against thee?

The Witness

These things have fallen away, and here I stand—The world, the flesh, and all the flesh can bring—And I look down on them as some dead thingThat cannot reach me now, nor touch my hand!Prolong this moment, Lord, ere I descendThe mount; ere lictors of the EmperorHale me again before Cæsar, or beforeThe lions of the arena! Send, oh, sendThine angels once again, that I may dwellIn heaven, and know—e'en in th'arena—it is well!

Self

O self, that blindeth till I cannot see;Till pains of sense encompass me!O self! without thee thought might flyOn pinioned wings, to dwell on high.

Bethlehem To-day

On a night of stars and singingA babe is born,Wrapt in humility,And cherished tenderly,And safely carried into EgyptFrom the wrath of Herod.

"Blest Christmas morn"*

Now dawns within my consciousnessThe first faint gleams of light —The star of Bethlehem rising; Its beams dispel the nightWhose clouds of sense would seem to hide God's presence from my sight.

As are the Silent Stars

As when some person, city-worn, has comeUpon an open space quite suddenly,And there has felt the freedom of the windUpon his face, and blessèd touch of stars,Silent beyond the pointing poplar trees; So I, this present hour, bound all about—Or as it seemed—with mist of many minds,Have come upon a breadth of space, and thereHave caught a sudden, starlit glimpse of Truth,Have felt the glad caress of angel-winds,And tasted of reality.

I Know No Care

I know no care,For Love is here;My only thought,To prove Him near,That I may daily sow Truth's seed,And help to meet a brother's need.

Divine Love

Love divine!Long years I searched the meaning of these words.

Our Prayer

When we think of mighty MosesAnd the tribes of Israel,How he led them unto CanaanFrom the very depths of hell; How he smote the rock for water,How he talked with God untilAll his countenance was shiningAnd his very soul was still—Oh, we want to be like Moses!Give us grace, O God, to beMeek and mighty, just like Moses;Give us, Lord, humility.
