[Written for the Sentinel]

Love's Requirement

Has thy brother aught against thee?
Has he reached out to thee for tenderness and love,
And hast thou seen in him as in a mirror bright
The clear reflection of the infinite?
And seeing thus, dost fold him to thine heart,
Knowing that Love and Love's reflection ne'er can part?

Or hast thou coldly passed him by,
Thinking 't is others' work to pity and to help,
Since thy to-day has many tasks which must be done
And time is short, as shows the setting sun,
Forgetting that the gift the Master asks of thee
Is love—Love's pure expression, true, unselfish, free?

So leave thy gift and hasten back
To where thou left thy brother on the road forlorn,
And from the treasure house of Love pour forth the wine
To heal and consecrate with peace divine;
So lift thy brother up to dwell in joy with thee,
In the full consciousness of Love supreme and free.
