Poems

One day I swept the doorstone of my heartAnd fanned the fire on its hearth to flame; With patient steps the oaken table spread,And laid thereon the bread my hands had made.

The Summons

I HEARD a voice that spoke and said:"Awake, and turn ye from the dead;O thou that sleepest long, awake,And see the joyous morning break.

LOST AND FOUND

I saw that in order to find my life, I had to first lose it—that is, lose all sense of life as material.

If I but Love

IF I but love,No shadow will I castAcross the pathway of another's day;Whatever I may think or do or say,I will but help another on his way,Nor burden more his task—If I but love.

An Understanding Heart

Give me, dear Lord, a heart so triedBy flames of purifying fire,That sin and self may be consumed,And in their stead a pure desireTo learn to love Thy chastening rodThat brings me ever nearer Thee;To grow more Christlike day by day,Thy tender love and goodness see.

Inspiration

The demand for church

I like to think of each church that grows up in a community as that community's answered prayer for the presence of the saving Christ—the message of God's love for humanity.

Be Thou My Strength Alway

Dear Father, like a thoughtless childI stumble oft and cry,Forgetting in my waywardnessThy guiding hand is nigh.

The Practitioner

You gave me friendship,Deep, enduring, strong; With wondrous patience.
Why hear ye not the Master's loving counselWhen burdened sense affirms great is the need?

Witness

Now through my daily round I goWith joyous steps, most willingly.

Light

When shadows deepen and my heart grows weary,Quite burdened with the weight of sin and woe,I find a refuge sweet in Love's abiding,And hear the gentle, "Peace, be still, and know.

The Way

To love as Jesus loved!O Truth, I look to Thee,And find Thine allness provedIn Love's sweet harmony.
