MY NEIGHBOR, MRS. EDDY
My name is Nadia. I came from a place called Druskeniki in Russia, when I was 12 years old, to live with my Aunt Fannie in Lynn, Massachusetts.
My aunt's backyard joined Mrs. Eddy's backyard, and I used to see Mrs. Eddy when I hung out the washing most mornings. Because I'd just arrived in America, I couldn't speak very much English.
Even though I couldn't understand her, Mrs. Eddy always smiled and spoke to me. I tried to remember to carry my little Russian-English dictionary with me so that I could learn a few more words each time I spoke with her.
