Welcoming words
“Welcome to this healing meeting.” I have often heard Readers in Churches of Christ, Scientist, say these words at Wednesday testimony meetings. Students of Christian Science expect that anyone participating in these holy gatherings can experience healing.
At one of these meetings, a friend shared what she had learned from a phrase in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness.” The entire text reads, “It is possible—yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman—to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 37).
I had seriously considered not going to church that night because I’d been feeling sharp pains in one of my legs throughout the day. I had prayed about the condition off and on, but not wholeheartedly—I was hoping it would just go away. However, when the suggestion came to stay home because of the discomfort, this angel message from God countered it: “If you are truly seeking a spiritual solution, then what better place to be than in a Christian Science testimony meeting!” So I went to church.
