The law of progress
For maximum progress, all our energies should go into spiritualizing thought.
At this moment in history, the world presents us with plenty of examples of hate, hopelessness, and woe. The picture of human suffering and injustice appears intense, and there is a danger of turning away out of fear or apathy. But neither is it helpful to be swept away by the tide of this view founded on a belief that existence is material.
What are we to do?
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, encouraged us to think differently about this question. She invested all her energy in seeking the spiritual reality, looking through the picture of a matter-based world to find something deeper. Spiritual truth, she found, does not offer mere doctrines and vague hopes that dull human disappointments. It uncovers reality as concrete—as Spirit, divine Principle, which has created man and the universe spiritually, not materially, and governs this creation harmoniously through spiritual laws. And she found that acknowledging and adhering to these laws, which Christ Jesus fully demonstrated, changes human experience as much today as it did in his day.
