A healing of discord in an educational community

Originally published in Spanish

What beautiful ideas are found in the Gospel of Matthew, where Christ Jesus says, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid” (5:14). We can be the light of the world—a blessing to our communities—by praying and allowing ourselves to be led by God. In 2023 I had the opportunity to evidence this.

I prayed conscientiously and enlisted the help of a Christian Science practitioner, as challenges presented themselves one after another in my workplace. I’m the principal of a primary school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There had been a disagreement between some of the mothers of the primary school students and the secondary school students, because some of the mothers were discovered to be selling drugs just outside the primary school’s premises. This led to the formation of two opposing groups who started to treat each other like enemies.

The municipal authorities intervened, and the disagreement between the families and the authorities became serious. The school community criticized the authorities for failing to give adequate support. There were heated meetings, and everything was chaotic. Classes were suspended, and marches were held by teachers and assistants. I prayed to keep in my thought God’s constant and unchanging presence, which can reverse discordant situations and turn thought in the right direction.
