Nerve pain gone
Some years ago, I felt a sharp and alarming pain in my upper arm. Not only did this hinder various activities, but it would also awaken me at night. I had never faced this type of pain before. It seemed to be a nerve problem, but I had no desire to have it diagnosed medically. Rather, I was confident that healing was possible through Christian Science.
I prayed to move away from believing that there were any material causes for the pain, such as bodily malfunction, accident, or aging. I affirmed that I am not a mortal doomed to face problems associated with a material existence but instead am the beloved, spiritual handiwork of an all-good God. Every day I studied the weekly Bible Lesson outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly and incorporated what I was learning into my prayers. All these steps brought great inspiration, but the pain did not immediately abate.
At one point, I remember turning in humility to God, divine Mind, and listening as I never had before for guidance. I knew that “Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 454). Love is a Bible-based synonym for God.
Not long after this, a family member mentioned that a close relative had recently undergone surgery for a medically diagnosed nerve condition, and his symptoms sounded identical to mine. After learning this, I began to prayerfully address common theories related to heredity. I acknowledged that we all have one divine Father-Mother, God, that this spiritual fact determines our health and every other quality we express, and that instead of possessing a material body, we embody only spiritual qualities. This divine reality establishes our true being. Material DNA does not.
I affirmed that divine Love not only meets every human need but must take form in a way that blesses all; otherwise, it is just an abstraction. I also considered statements in Science and Health about mental surgery. I had already experienced instances of this in the past, such as when some years earlier, a large wooden splinter embedded in my hand simply disappeared within a few days through Christianly scientific prayer.
The following idea was particularly helpful with the arm pain: “Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness” (Science and Health, p. 162).
I recognized that while a surgeon focuses on manipulating matter to fix a problem with the body, Christian Science addresses our thought. Prayer does not somehow alter a material condition, but instead reveals the underlying perfection of our real, spiritual being. Holding to these ideas and persisting in prayer, I was healed.
One evening, I felt what seemed to be an adjustment within my arm. The pain vanished and has not returned in the 15 years since this experience. I am very grateful for my deeper understanding of how God acts in specific and beneficial ways in all aspects of our lives.
