Healed of warts on foot
Shortly after graduating from college, I entered training to become a Christian Science nurse. Around this time, I had what appeared to be a layer of warts covering the heel of one foot. It was uncomfortable to place pressure on this foot for any length of time. I had prayed off and on about the situation, but although I found this prayer comforting, I hadn’t noticed any physical improvement.
During the Christian Science nurses training program, I was required to spend two weeks observing and learning from the activities of a visiting Christian Science nurse, which was quite inspiring. During those two weeks, I also devoted time to study and prayer, which enabled me to see myself more clearly as God sees me. In addition, I attended a Bible talk on the subject of Job.
I was impressed that the Bible describes Job as a man who was “perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil” (Job 1:1). And yet, he faced many difficulties that tempted him to depart from his devotion to God. One night before I went to bed, I began to think deeply about Job’s story. Job expected and demanded that he had the right to hear from God about whether he was a sinner and deserved all the suffering he was experiencing. But instead of directly answering Job’s question, God asks him, “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?” (38:4). I saw this as a perfect example of the fact that a problem can’t be solved from the same level of belief where the problem seems to exist. I realized that the answer to Job’s question (and mine) could only be found in sincerely acknowledging the truth that God’s eternal power and authority are fully active here and now.
