A spiritual baptism
I was raised as a Christian Scientist. I always loved going to Sunday School and learning about God, studying the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly, and learning to play hymns on the piano.
My family moved several times while I was growing up, and each time the place we moved to was more remote and the congregation of the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, smaller. When I was a sophomore in high school, we moved to a small town in the Southwest where there were no other students of Christian Science. In fact, almost the entire town went to one church. I continued to study Christian Science on my own and discussed it with my parents, but it was quite different from my younger years, when I had been surrounded by Christian Scientists my own age.
I went to many church functions with friends who were of this other faith, and even had long discussions with its leaders, who encouraged me to join their church. Their confidence in their religious beliefs was strong. Yet, while I respected everyone I met and talked to, I remained committed to learning more about God and following the teachings of Jesus as elucidated by Christian Science.
