Church lifted me out of grief
The passing of a loved one can be difficult, yet it is possible to feel a release from the darkness of grief. Instead of feeling a sense of separation, we can glimpse God’s never-ending love, as well as His never-ending spiritual creation, which includes each of us.
When a very close friend who had been like a sister to me passed, I was helped by gaining a better understanding of her identity as spiritual. Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, explains in her Bible-based work Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures that man (which includes all of us) is spiritual, created by God, and that this spiritual individuality we each have continues on forever.
At a Sunday service at a local Church of Christ, Scientist, I was gently lifted out of my sorrow when I felt nudged by this higher view of man. You might call such promptings angels, as defined metaphysically in Science and Health: “God’s thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, …” (p. 581).
