Healing of cold symptoms
I was preparing for bed and felt symptoms of a cold coming on. “Uh-oh,” I thought at first. “You’re not feeling so hot. Tomorrow is Sunday, and you’re First Reader in church, in charge of the church service. Will your voice be ready for that?”
I had a decision to make. Did I have to accept a set of rules mandating the onset and stages of the common cold? No! Was there a higher law that promised a better way? Yes! The Master, Christ Jesus, promised a Comforter that would overrule the verdict of material sense. This Comforter has been identified by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, as Divine Science (see Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 55).
I thought of the way Mrs. Eddy, through her writings, counsels readers regarding approaching symptoms of disease. In Science and Health she writes, “Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony” (p. 495). We are given this promise of freedom as an antidote to all false beliefs—including cold symptoms.
