In God’s own likeness
How is it that Jesus was able to heal the sick, the sinner, and the dying? In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy explains how Jesus healed, and how we can too. On pages 476 to 477 she wrote: “Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.”
This has always been one of my favorite passages. This clarity of spiritual vision came naturally to Christ Jesus because of his profound consciousness of the Christ, which he represented, and which Mrs. Eddy says is “the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness” (Science and Health, p. 332).
Our own thorough daily study of the spiritual sense of the Scriptures helps awaken in us a more spiritually adroit consciousness and enables each of us to heal in a similar manner, as Jesus expected his followers to do. As Jesus taught his disciples in the Lord’s Prayer (see Matthew 6:9–13), our prayers for ourselves or for someone who asks for healing must start with God as the creator and sustainer of perfection.
