‘I cannot be tricked!’
Have you ever unexpectedly found yourself in a situation where you felt vulnerable to someone’s manipulative tactics? At such times we can rely on a foundational teaching in Christian Science: that God is All—all Truth, all power, all Love. A further teaching is that man, as God’s reflection, knows and expresses divine Truth, God. The understanding of these two spiritual facts can prevent us from being duped into believing a lie about God or man when a lie is presented to thought, such as the lie that God is powerless, or that man is material, separated from God and incapable of knowing God. We can know that we have the inherent ability to discern and live the truth, and thereby recognize a lie as a lie.
We have the inherent ability to discern and live the truth, and thereby recognize a lie as a lie.
A recent experience compelled me to pray more deeply about this important metaphysical lesson in regard to not being duped. One morning I received a phone call from a woman presenting herself as an agent of the IRS (Internal Revenue Service). She informed me that I was being criminally charged with tax fraud. She explained that the consequences for my violations included my immediate arrest. She used various tactics, including creating fear and attacking my credibility, to motivate me to follow her instructions. She assured me that she could get me out of these problems that I had created if I would send her a check for a certain amount of money.
