My suffering stopped
“Christian Science erases from the minds of invalids their mistaken belief that they live in or because of matter, or that a so-called material organism controls the health or existence of mankind, and induces rest in God, divine Love, as caring for all the conditions requisite for the well-being of man” (Mary Baker Eddy, Rudimental Divine Science, p. 12). That passage is the foundation of my testimony of healing.
One Sunday a few years ago, during the service at the local branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I attend, I suddenly suffered acute stomach pains and had to leave the room to go to the restroom. But the spiritual truths being read from the Lesson-Sermon uplifted my thought. After I came back into the room, I was tempted to rush home, but verse 10, in particular, from Psalm 91—“There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling”—helped me feel assured that I could stay until the end of the service.
Actually, a few Sunday School teachers and I had committed to going after the church service to an orphanage located about five kilometers from downtown (three kilometers by bus and then a walk of two kilometers on foot), where our church holds a Christian Science Sunday School. I was still in pain, but I felt I could attend and would not need to excuse myself. I did not want to give a place in my thoughts to this error of suffering or allow myself to fear it. There is a divine power, always present, that governs every aspect of our existence and on which we can rely.
