‘One step enough for me’
Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling
gloom,
Lead Thou me on;
The night is dark, and I am far from
home,
Lead Thou me on.
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough
for me.
(John Henry Newman, Christian Science Hymnal, No. 169)
It was a night of “encircling gloom,” with fog so dense I could see only a short distance beyond the hood of my car. I was driving alone, on a dark rural highway, as far from home as from my distant destination. Forging ahead or going back seemed risky, but there was nowhere to be safely off the road. It was a moment when prayer was my only choice.
