A fruitful search
It always seemed right to attend church, even though early on I felt I wasn’t going to find truth there. Whereas good literature and deep conversations often inspired me, church seldom did.
When I was a high school senior, the minister called a group of us in for a meeting to explain our church. I was sure that, finally, the important things would be made clear. But it was not to be. He explained the church government, the administrative policies, etc. To him, these elements made up the church’s foundation. The words God, Jesus, Bible, were not even mentioned—a major disappointment to a truth-seeking 17-year-old.
During a brief period in my early 20s, I set out to discover what truth was—what was real and what was important to me. Each evening, for a few weeks, I sat quietly thinking about truth.
