Never alone
Originally written in Spanish, this was first published in the May 2013 Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German editions of The Herald of Christian Science.
When I was a junior in college, I opened an advertising agency with two friends. Soon I realized that it was quite difficult to both do my studies and maintain the ad agency. One week I had to accomplish so much that the situation became a huge burden.
I was quite worried until I decided I could pray about this. Almost immediately, a phrase from the Bible came to my mind: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10 ). This idea helped me see that I wasn’t alone. “Being still” didn’t mean that I had to sit and do nothing. I just needed to trust that God would guide me to do everything with wisdom. Divine Love is a power that can solve everything; it is right at hand and can be proved to be so.
Whenever the temptation to worry crept in, I remembered that Bible passage. I felt strengthened by the certainty that everything was under God’s control. As a consequence, something great happened. All things began to shape up, and by the end of that week, I had met all my obligations without any effort on my part to control any outcomes. And all went well.
I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School since I was a child. There I learned to turn to God whenever I was afraid.
One healing occurred when I was playing in our garden and my stomach began hurting. On other occasions, my grandma had given me tea or something else to alleviate the discomfort. This time, I remembered that we had talked in Sunday School about God being a very present help and that He had made everything good.
I closed my eyes and thought: “God made me harmonious, and nothing can change that.” A wonderful sense of peace came over me. I realized that if God had made me well, absolutely nothing could change that. At that moment, the stomach pain disappeared, and never came back.
Another time, when I was 12, my trust in God protected me. Coming home from a friend’s house one day, I was walking through a farm when I heard a dog barking. I soon discovered it was coming toward me, growling. I threw a stone at him to chase him away, but the dog became more furious. I was very afraid. No one was around to ask for help. Then I realized I could pray.
I remembered that I had heard in Sunday School that all God’s creatures are good because He created everything good. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “All of God’s creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible” (p. 514 ). Then I said to the dog, “God has created you and me, so you can do me no harm.” The dog immediately stopped growling and went away. I kept walking, feeling at peace and grateful because the answer had been so immediate.
Christian Science has taught me that I can always count on God.
