Healed by Love's light
When my son was building a lovely area around a perennial garden for me, I helped him carry heavy landscape blocks to the backyard. After a few months, I found I was in much discomfort in my left shoulder, and for over a year I was hindered in my normal activities. At night, I could sleep only on one side and had to prop pillows under my arm so I could rest peacefully.
During this time several acquaintances mentioned that they had needed surgery for shoulder injuries. I hadn’t told anyone about my situation, but as I listened to them, I found I really had a desire to prove Christian Science and use the truths I had been sincerely studying for some time. I had no doubt that God would supply the understanding and “light” I needed to bring about a healing.
I also desired to help others through Christian Science practice and thought I must be able to prove it for myself before trying to help others. So I continued to study the Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly and went to bed each night with a comforting Bible verse or a thought from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
One night I quieted my thought with this Bible verse: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10 ). I realized that to know God is an action whereby I could recognize that His “everlasting arms of Love / Are beneath, around, above” (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 53 ). At 3 a.m. I awoke hearing a loud snap. When I realized there had been an adjustment in my shoulder, I gave thanks for God’s love and for this proof of His care.
I knew I was healed when the next morning I found myself lying on my left side after a peaceful night’s rest—something I had been unable to do for over a year. Full use of my arm was also restored.
Many years after this healing, I felt inspired to take Christian Science Primary class instruction. With the guidance from a teacher of Christian Science, the class goes one step at a time through consecrated study of the chapter “Recapitulation” in Science and Health. The pupils learn about this Science together, but their teacher and every pupil are also praying individually to be enlightened in the exact ways that will help each of them.
During class I experienced a very quick healing of severe pain in my right shoulder. I was learning in class how to handle any misconception of my spiritual self through Christian Science treatment. As a result, I was healed within a day and a half and was completely free of any discomfort.
Setting aside time for class was a joyous and extremely worthwhile experience for me, and I’m so grateful to have had this Christ-inspired teaching.
