In this occasional series, individuals share how taking Christian Science Primary class instruction has strengthened their spiritual understanding and brought increasing inspiration and healing to their lives.
Training for effective healers
I attended a Christian Science Sunday School nearly every week until my late teens. Although I didn’t practice Christian Science much for the next 10–12 years, I was aware of all I had been taught by many dedicated, knowledgeable Sunday School teachers. Later, after taking up the study of Christian Science again, I rather smugly thought there wasn’t much that could be taught in a 12–day class that I hadn’t learned in so many years of Sunday School.
I joined my local branch church and then The Mother Church. I rarely missed a day reading the Christian Science Bible Lesson. I rejoiced in healings, some through my own prayers and some through help from Christian Science practitioners.
Gradually, I became a more serious student of the Bible, Mary Baker Eddy’s writings, and the Christian Science periodicals. I came to realize that Mrs. Eddy knew what she was doing when she established Primary class instruction. I started feeling left out from those who enjoyed annual Christian Science students’ association meetings and reported the deep inspiration they felt from those meetings. Just a couple of years ago, I realized the time had come for me to take class instruction, and I was led through prayer to my teacher. Articles she had written for the periodicals really spoke to me.
