Easter ideas

When I arrived home last evening, there was a new Sentinel, “Easter Gladness,” dated April 2. I started reading it and just couldn’t put it down! There were so many helpful viewpoints about Easter that I really enjoyed, but I was particularly uplifted by “Forsaken By God?” by Abby Hillman. She discussed Psalm 22, since Jesus used a few verses from that psalm when he was on the cross. I had heard before that the entire psalm was something Jesus was praying with, but Abby made it clear that it was a complete treatment, going from anguish to glory. I was very grateful for her insights into this prayer and had to say thank you.

I am always so grateful to receive this publication, but the ideas on Easter in this issue really stood out to me.

Also, I am always thrilled to read the articles by teens and see how they are applying the laws of God found in Science and Health to their daily lives.

Thanks for sharing

I read with interest Margaret Wylie’s letter in the April 2 Sentinel, where she said: “Someone once shared the suggestion that instead of recalling your age as a number, put the corresponding hymn number in its place so that way you can have your own hymn to cherish through the year. I highly recommend this. I have done it, and it has brought much joy.” What an inspiration to think of this concept! Thanks so much Margaret!

An invitation

You wrote, “We at the Sentinel think spiritually scientific prayer could help the [decrease in murder rates] continue. We’re inviting you to join in” (“As murder rates fall,” March 19).

Invitation accepted!

Christ Jesus is recorded in John 14:12 as saying, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

Is not one of the works greater than raising the dead, healing the suggestion that someone would want to, or even could, cause another’s death? I think so. Yet another “greater work” is all pitching in together to minimize and ultimately eradicate evils that seem endemic and cause so much suffering.

If we are faithful in this good work, we will see a worldwide drop in murder, whether its source is called war, gang violence, vengeance, fear, negligence, or state-sanctioned execution.

I look forward to a “progress report” and other invitations for unified prayerful action in future Sentinels.

Timely article

How timely is Mark Swinney’s article, “ ‘Sometimes I fall down, too!’ ” in the March 5 Sentinel. I read it the day after watching the PBS program “American Experience,” which focused on the political life of former President Bill Clinton. As Mr. Swinney says, “It’s wonderful that it’s never too late to recognize the powerlessness of mistakes and the pure, divine goodness that has been the genuine essence of one’s life all along.”

The Sentinel really does keep “abreast of the times”!
