In this series, individuals share how taking Christian Science Primary class instruction has strengthened their spiritual understanding, and brought increasing inspiration and healing to their lives.
Special time with God
I was a brand-new mother and just wanted to know how to heal, so I applied to go through class with a Christian Science teacher who had helped me prayerfully with the birth of my first daughter. I was thrilled when this teacher wrote to tell me that I had been accepted into her next class.
At that time, our family was living in Sydney, far from my teacher, so I arranged to stay just outside her city with my husband’s parents on their small farm. I planned to travel with them on their way to work each morning, catch a train into the city, go to class, and return home every afternoon. Things were a little primitive on the farm, and it was necessary to do my nightly homework by kerosene lamp, as the electricity generator was turned off each evening when the others went to bed. It was very quiet with the generator off, and I loved this special time with God, preparing for the next day’s class.
Each day of class was a thrilling revelation. I was particularly impressed with the way we were shown that everything Mary Baker Eddy wrote was the result of her deep Bible study, never something she just “made up.” I was the youngest in my class, the “baby,” but regardless of age, we were all eager to drink in the ideas imparted to us. Soon, we were learning to give Christian Science treatments, and it was such a joy to have our teacher’s loving encouragement and guidance then and in subsequent years.
