‘All glorious within’

In Mary Baker Eddy’s writings, she clearly sets out how to mentally resist the imposition of false thinking—thoughts that result in disease and suffering. That was made clear to me some years ago, when I suddenly became quite ill. Faced with a frightening situation, I began to pray diligently and had no trouble keeping my thought focused on the truths I had learned from my study of Christian Science—that man is the spiritual idea of God, not a mortal whose well-being is determined by the physical senses.

I had been busy with housework when I began to experience pain in my chest. The pain was intense and constant, and at first I was scared. I had two children who would be back from school in the early afternoon, and I could hardly move. I was wishing my husband was with me since he was such a devoted Christian Scientist, but he wouldn’t be home from work until later in the day.

I called a Christian Science practitioner, who calmly talked with me, helping to remove my extreme fear. Among other passages, he quoted a Bible verse from Psalms: “The king’s daughter is all glorious within” (45:13).
