Symptoms of malaria healed

In the summer of 1985, I began a two-year tour of duty in the Peace Corps as a teacher at the University of Benin in Benin, West Africa. Prior to my departure, I was required to take numerous vaccinations and a malaria prophylaxis. Although I consented to these requirements, I still found myself feeling ill with symptoms of malaria on two occasions during my first few months in the country.

Being a Christian Scientist, I turned to prayer for healing, and prayed to overcome any symptoms that caused discomfort. I quickly found relief. About six months later, I abandoned the malaria prophylaxis, feeling strongly that taking such pills was not in agreement with my understanding of God’s omnipotent care for me. I had found healing through Christian Science before, and was comfortable relying on it as a means of maintaining my health. However, that December I again came down with the symptoms associated with malaria, which persisted for three months.

During this time, I had the support of a Christian Science practitioner, who was also a teacher of Christian Science. I would contact my mother by phone once a week, and she would, in turn, call the practitioner. Phone calls were expensive and not easy to make since I had to walk to the local post office, where the call would be dialed by an attendant. But I was grateful to feel the practitioner’s support while I was living alone.
