Freed from illness

First published in Le Héraut de la Science Chrétienne, the French edition of The Herald of Christian Science.

A little over a year ago, I suddenly became ill. I was very dizzy and felt my body becoming completely weak. All movement was difficult, and yet I needed to wash up to go do my shopping. I remained motionless for a long time, for fear of aggravating the situation. All sorts of assumptions crowded my thinking, as I was trying to find a cause for this illness. Sometimes fear told me it was a blood pressure problem because, as a child, I had often had high blood pressure. Sometimes the suggestion came this was a malicious attack by a sorcerer or that it could be the result of drinking a native tea that morning.

After finally realizing that the solution could come only through prayer, I decided to reject all those fears that were coming to me. Since I knew that prayer in Christian Science heals, I awoke to the fact that right at this moment, even when everything seemed to be going wrong, God was my refuge and strength, “a very present help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1). I really held on to this thought during this entire time of crisis.

With this prayer, I was able to get up. I felt better and could stand on my own two feet, with no risk of falling again. So I went out to do my shopping. However, although I understood that it was thanks to God that I was already doing much better, my questions about the causes of this sudden deterioration of my health returned.
