The glorious variety of God's creation
For the lesson titled "God the Only Cause and Creator" from November 28-December 4, 2011
God’s splendor is so abundant that we don’t need to seek it out—it surrounds us!
The Bible Lesson this week, titled “God the Only Cause and Creator,” is full of beautiful images of the glorious variety of God’s creation. Several psalms at the beginning of the Lesson speak of God’s springs of water and of the animals and birds that drink from them. They also mention the moon, the sun, and the sea all glorifying God (see Ps., chap. 148, Responsive Reading; Ps., chap. 104, citation 1; Ps., chap. 8, cit. 3). God is generous in giving us the gifts of the Spirit.
In Psalm 104, the metaphor “[God] layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters” (verse 3, cit. 1) could be rephrased as, “God has built his bedroom in the waters above the firmament.” The firmament was believed to be the lowest part of the heavens, which also included the moon, the sun, the planets, and the stars.
