Healing in my family
It has been more than 60 years since my dad left the church he grew up in, in search of a clearer concept of God. He found his answer just a block away—at a Church of Christ, Scientist. Although he wasn’t specifically seeking physical health, a wonderful side effect of his newfound way of life was a complete healing of double curvature of the spine and crippling arthritis, as well as a smoking addiction and quick temper (see Sentinel, May 23, 1959, p. 913). He and mom were so eager to practice what they were learning about God that they decided to have a third child (me!) and teach and share this new understanding they were gaining of a loving, ever-present, omnipotent Father-Mother God.
I’ve had many proofs of God’s care while growing up—from protection and quick healing of children’s diseases, to injuries incurred as an athletic, adventurous tomboy.
When my husband and I had our own children, our three sons gave us many opportunities to pray. With each experience came greater appreciation for Christian Science healing. At one point, one of our sons, then three years old, sat on a hornet’s nest. A neighbor carried him into our house, advising that our son was covered with stings and that he’d need treatment. This neighbor also knew that our family relied on Christian Science for healing. He left the room while I comforted our son and talked to him about God’s creatures, including the hornets, being “harmless, useful, indestructible” (Science and Health, p. 514).
