A friend, a health fair, and a web search

About 15 years ago , a friend and I were discussing various religions when the subject of Christian Science came up. “Now there’s a religion,” he proclaimed. “When people can heal themselves based on their belief, then that’s about as close to God as you can get.” We were mystified at some of the healing stories we had heard and wondered how they were possible.

Twelve years later I got my chance to unravel “the mystery.”

While I was manning a booth at a local health fair, my eyes lit up when I saw a Christian Science booth nearby. A tall, kind gentleman stood like a beacon beside the table filled with literature. I could not wait for my chance to pepper him with all my questions. When that chance came, he told me his story of being healed of tuberculosis. He encouraged me to check out a Christian Science Reading Room to find answers to many of my questions. With a handful of Christian Science literature, I left with a promise to do so. I also left with a surprising discovery: I knew I wasn’t going back to my religion. Despite my love for it, I knew it had served its usefulness. Time to move forward.
