NO POWER BUT GOD

Last summer my beloved dog, Jack, had a series of health problems that demanded my prayerful attention. It seemed like each time I faced one down, another arose. Then one morning, Jack disappeared on a hike behind my house. After I'd spent an hour searching and praying, the thought came to head home. He was there! I was so grateful, but he had a large gash in his leg and was shaking. It was a deep wound, and I felt overwhelmed and upset by everything that seemed to be happening to Jack.

As I cleaned the wound and held a bandage to his leg, I remembered a verse from the Bible: "But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ" (II Cor. 11:3).

I immediately thought of a scene I'd witnessed at a store a while earlier. A little boy was crying hysterically as his father pulled him away from an item on a store shelf. "I want it!" the boy screamed. I couldn't hear his father's reply, only his tone—calm, firm, kind. But the boy would not be swayed. "No! I need it. It's important! The other kids have it. It's for school!"
