THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

STILLNESS ... IN NEPAL

I was writing in my photography journal at a lovely garden cafe overlooking Phewa Tal Lake in Pokhara, Nepal. The lake rests in the center of a valley, a shimmering drop of mercury held in place by the mountains encircling it. I've seldom known such stillness, and I took a little time for prayer.

In my mind's eye, I anticipated a photograph. I continued writing as I patiently waited for the changing landscape to match my vision. Soon, spectacular light slid betweeen the mountains, layering the terrain into graduated blues. All I needed was a foreground element as a focal point.

Suddenly a boat glided into the scene. I reached for my camera and raced for the shoreline. I set my exposure to record the boaters in silhouette against the iridescent water. I framed them in the bottom right, gloriously layered mountains rising behind them, and clicked the shutter.

Every time I mentally revisit this scene, I am reminded of something Mary Baker Eddy once wrote, "The nature of Christianity is peaceful and blessed, ..." (Science and Health, p. 40). And I think, how right she was! |css
