PRAYER QUICKLY HEALS INTENSE BACK PAIN

One Sunday afternoon several years ago, I hurt my back while playing on the floor with our infant daughter. It was only with great difficulty that I was able to stand up. For the rest of the afternoon and evening, I was unable to walk freely or upright and was in a fair amount of pain when I did need to move. Sitting was also uncomfortable. I wish I could say that I sat down and began praying immediately, but I didn't. I could still get around the house, albeit very slowly, so I just took it easy, thinking that all I needed was a good night's sleep in my comfortable bed.

I slept well, and by morning felt ready to go forward with my day. I heard my daughter giggling in her crib and decided I would go and get her up. However, when I tried to stand up to walk to the other room, I collapsed to the floor in intense pain. My wife made sure I was OK, and while she went to attend to our daughter, I slowly got back into bed.

I was now fully awake to the need to pray diligently for myself. I knew I could no longer ignore the situation. And I had to forgive myself for not attending to the situation when it had first arisen the day before. I sat in bed for some time listening for God's quieting thoughts. As I prayed, I felt some relief from the intensity of the pain. Soon I reached for Science and Health and began praying with several ideas that stood out to me—ideas that helped change my thoughts about my body and lift the focus off the sensation of pain.
