BOUNCE BACK

THINK OF THE STORY of Kevin Martin. The Canadian curling master and national hero fell from grace eight years ago. He tossed the last 42-pound curling stone at the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics in the gold medal match against Norway, needing only a routine toss to win. He failed.

He couldn't get a do-over—he couldn't wind back the hands of time. But Kevin Martin did get a second chance.

For the next eight years, he persevered, staying with the sport, practicing and competing, never quitting. It took a lot of work and a lot of mental strength. It meant enduring eight years of regret for the past and uncertainty about the future. But he did it. He got Team Canada to the gold medal match in February's 2010 Winter Olympics, and at the decisive moment, he curled an ace for the win.
