HEALTHCARE—AND AN IMPORTANT QUESTION
WOULD JESUS MAKE A PERSON CHOOSE between food and medicine?
That's the thought-provoking question recently posed in a USAToday op-ed piece addressing the issue of universal healthcare in the United States ("Would God back universal health care?" July 27, p. 9A). Author Oliver Thomas—a minister, lawyer, and author of the book 10 Things Your Minister Wants to Tell You (But Can't Because He Needs the Job)—puts forth a persuasive argument for why the Bible, as well as many other sacred texts, upholds legislation guaranteeing medical coverage to some 46 million uninsured Americans, many of whom face difficult choices about going without basic necessities in order to pay for healthcare.
