THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY of greater Boston has celebrated a major milestone with the formal opening of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, which houses the largest mosque in New England.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 26 marked the emergence of the community as an active participant in city life. Envisioned as a place for Muslims of different backgrounds to come together for worship and feast days, the center has also become a way to reach out and engage the broader community.
"It was hard for the Muslim community to mature. We were reclusive and didn't know how to interact openly." says Yousef Abou Allaban, the initial director of the center project. "But we have made a breakthrough in a short time, and we want to contribute as an integral part of society."
