SAFE OUT AT SEA
Some years ago, I was on a business trip, traveling from Washington, DC, to Jakarta, Indonesia. A colleague and I had flown to Hawaii for a rest stop before going on to Jakarta, and had anticipated swimming off beautiful Waikiki Beach near the Diamond Head volcano. We were both strong swimmers, and when we headed out to the ocean the next morning, neither of us had really given any thought to tides or currents. We chatted as we swam, and aimed for what appeared to be a small park along the beach well before Diamond Head. As we continued swimming in the placid waters, we had no notion of the peril we'd soon be facing.
Suddenly, we began encountering waves and white caps, quite unaware we had been swept beyond the protection of Diamond Head and into the open waters of the Pacific. Sailboats and other swimmers were mere specks and well beyond hailing distance. Immediately we began to swim straight for shore.
I remember my first frightened thought was: You may find out just what your lifesaving book described about drowning. Then quickly, as a life-long Christian Scientist, I corrected that thought, and reached out to God, knowing He was "a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). I affirmed in prayer that the divine law of God's all-power and presence was in effect at that moment. I asked God to give me the saving idea I needed that would uplift me spiritually and save both me and my friend.
