MY CONSTANT COMPANION

FOR SEVERAL YEARS I'd been my wife's caregiver. After she passed on, I attempted to return to a normal sense of life alone. My strongest challenge was a deep loss of companionship that had been a major component of our wonderful 47-year marriage.

For decades I'd relied on God and what Christian Science taught me about Him to comfort, support, and heal me. But I suddenly found that my prayers seemed only partially effective in overcoming my despair.

I struggled with living by myself, wishing I had someone to share social events, TV shows, and with whom I could simply discuss topics of common interest. Mostly I didn't know where to begin to construct a new life—I just felt confused and in a fog-like state most of the time, engulfed in completing legal responsibilities and learning how to run a home. Then it occurred to me that my anguish came from a lack of spiritual study and focused prayer.
