THIS WEEK'S CHRISTIAN SCIENCE BIBLE LESSON, on the subject of "Sacrament," offers a spiritual perspective of the word that can bring healing to individuals, churches, and communities.
The modern word sacrament comes from the Latin word sacramentum. In the time of the Roman Empire, it most often referred to a soldier's ceremonial oath, pledging absolute loyalty to a general. A current dictionary defines sacrament as a "visible sign of an inward grace, especially one of the solemn Christian rites considered to be instituted by Jesus Christ to symbolize or confer grace."
