ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER
'IN MY HEART LIKE A FIRE'
MY MOTHER AND I FOUND CHRISTIAN SCIENCE through her healing of a severe itching condition for which there was no permanent medical remedy. From that time on, we studied it together, yearning to know more about what had healed her. This initial spark continued to drive my interest in spiritual healing through college and into the business world.
I was an artist represented by a New York Gallery in SoHo at the time my Church of Christ, Scientist, elected me to be its First Reader. During the readership I so loved the constancy of depending upon God for the preparation of the readings and the services that I never wanted that to stop. It didn't, and as I grew in my understanding of my relationship to Him, my love for my neighbor grew as well. This kindled an inner desire to share the powerful truths I was learning in Christian Science with others. It felt unstoppable. I can only describe this desire in the words of Jeremiah: "His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot" (Jer. 20:9, New International Version).
I learned eventually that this "fire" had a very simple explanation. Since God is the only source and cause of life, all continuity and fulfillment in my life come from Him. The impelling to help people had been His impelling. And where God provides a supply, He also creates a demand for it. People began calling me for help through prayer. And I felt ready to respond.
