FREE FROM MIGRAINES

In April 2007, while I was out for a walk, the familiar dull symptoms of a migraine began to come on. For a number of years, I'd struggled with these headaches, and as a student of Christian Science, I'd found it effective to treat the situation through prayer. Usually, I'd call a Christian Science practitioner for help.

So, in this case, my first response was to pray, acknowledging that I was God's child, naturally comfortable and free in His care. When I arrived at my apartment, I found I was facing a barrage of thoughts that claimed my day and evening were now ruined, that I should just go ahead and cancel any plans. But right then part of "A Rule for Motives and Acts" from the Church Manual by Mary Baker Eddy came to thought: "The members of this Church should daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously" (p. 40).

To me, this meant that accepting the thought that a migraine was on its way and had power to bring turmoil to my day was "prophesying erroneously," or predicting pain. In obedience to that spiritual understanding, I affirmed that God had only good planned for me and that my prayer was effective. I could trust that God, who is divine Truth, was at work. So I followed through with plans to meet friends at a bowling alley.
