BACK PAIN HEALED

One Sunday in November 2007, I woke up feeling just fine. However, when I bent over to seal a bag of cat food, I felt a popping in my back and buckled to my knees.

I have successfully relied on Christian Science for healing many times, and the first thing I thought of, after the initial surprise and discomfort, was "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health, by Mary Baker Eddy. It begins: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all," and ends, "Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual" (p. 468). The significance of these familiar powerful words—affirming what was true for me and what was not true—filled me with gratitude and dispelled my fears.

In fact, when my husband found me on all fours, I was able to laugh, pointing at a hawk in a tree across the street, which I'd spotted from my unique position! He helped me up, and I stood, although with difficulty. In spite of the pain and unsteadiness I seemed to be feeling, some prior study about being an expression of God's spiritual "upright man" supported me as I dressed, went to church, and stood my post as a Welcoming Committee usher. The Bible Lesson Sermon for that day was on "Soul and Body," and it included statements that fit my need. For example, this from Science and Health: "Man is not the offspring of flesh, but of Spirit,—of Life, not of matter" (p. 289). And from Acts, I listened intently to the healing of a lame man (see 3:1–10). Grateful to be able to move at all, and for the inspiration I gained from the service, I trusted there would be improvement.
