A comforting promise
Perhaps one of the most frightening aspects about a loved one's passing is the fear of a void to follow — of that person being alone and uncared for. On the heels of that may come the desperate feeling that God and all His goodness have somehow left both of you.
Yet God is always right there.
Inspired by Jesus' healing works, Mary Baker Eddy wrote many assurances of God's meticulous care. Here's a favorite of mine: "The divine Mind [God] maintains all identities, from a blade of grass to a star, as distinct and eternal" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 70). What an awesome idea! The divine Presence eternally preserves everyone's uniqueness. There's deep comfort and healing in that promise.
