WHO'S RESPONSIBLE

WE WAITED AT the American Airlines counter. The FAA had required safety inspections for Southwest Airlines' MD-80's. And now American also had to cancel hundreds of flights—including one for some of my colleagues and myself. We were stalled in Dallas on the way to a meeting in Guadalajara, Mexico. Others in the group had made it out earlier. As I probed for any responsibility American may have had, the customer service person pushed back.

We scheduled some of the only seats left on a flight the next day—which would get us to the meeting with barely a minute to spare. We got rooms and stayed over at the local Courtyard by Marriott.

Could anything more happen? Well, in the middle of the night a storm hit our part of the city, knocking out power. When I entered the hallway, there was total darkness.
