THAT'S LIFE

Driving through town on an autumn morning—a morning filled with color and life — I listened to this soulful lyric sung by the Pat McGee Band: "I wake up every day, go through the same routine. Go to work, come home, what does it all really mean?"

I realized that this is a universal question, something people have been yearning to answer for generations, at any stage of life. It points to the fact that we long for something more than just survival. And as this week's Sentinel explains, a life filled with a knowledge of God is all about continual discovery and letting go of preconceived expectations about what our path may look like.

Charles Ferris tells of a "lakeside awakening" he had as he "realized more clearly than ever before that God was actually the substance of [his] life—that God is Life itself and the Life of everyone." Speaking about the power of this acknowledgement, he continues: "Every time we experience something of God's dominion over a material limitation or distress, we're letting the true concept of Life advance us further. . . . The spiritual seer continually improves the quality of life here and now" (p. 6).
