IN THE NEWS A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE

SPIRITUAL STRENGTH IN AN UNCERTAIN ECONOMY

EVEN IF the financial bailout that's being discussed in the United States Congress and Senate has passed by the time this article is published, the road ahead will still have some twists and turns. Our prayers can support intelligent decisions about implementing policies toward national and international banks and businesses as well as homeowners who are facing foreclosure.

As in most cases, fear is the enemy that needs to be defeated. The New York Times notes, "Fear may be the biggest driver . . . worry that it may be weeks or longer before companies can get the affordable, shortterm loans they need to finance their operations" (" 'Is My Money Safe?' and Other Questions to Ask," September 30, 2008). As in other endeavors, fear tends to squelch freedom — in this case the healthy flow of money — and to freeze progress.

As they see companies fail, jobs disappearing, and potential threats to retirement funds and life savings, many are dealing with fear and concern. But it's vital to resist this impulse and instead pray to prove that there's a solution based in Spirit, not matter. This spiritual solution has an effect in the day-to-day world where the crisis seems very real and threatening to many people.
